The painting is inspired by the novel, Siege of Mithila, written by the Indian author Ashok K. Banker. The book is the second volume of The Ramayana series and is based on an ancient Indian epic from the second century BCE. The Asuras are a group of power-hungry demons from Hindu cosmology. However, the older sources of the legend describe them as more benevolent. The name is thought to be related to the word as in Ancient Nordic mythology. Asia has often been identified as the homeland of the Scandinavian Asa gods.
