Lying West of the Brandywine River, and beyond the Old Forest, the Barrow Downs were the most ancient burial ground of men in Middle Earth. Dome shaped hills crowned with monoliths and rings of white stone, the Downs were covered with grass; no trees grew there and no water ran. The Downs were revered and sacred to the Dúnedain men, until tortured spirits took home there, fleeing the evil witch-kingdom of Angmar. Often wreathed in fog, they then became a source of dread to dwellers of both the Shire to the East and Bree to the West.
Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin travel through the Barrow Downs towards the beginning of their journey, and become trapped by the evil spirits.
