Not so long after Frodo and the hobbits had left the safety of the shire, Tom Bombadil came to their rescue when Old Man Willow had entangled them in his branches. Tom was an ancient and mysterious man of the woods who had lived forever in harmony with the animals and trees, and had authority over them. Tom and his wife Goldberry gave the hobbits shelter and sound advice before directing them on their way.
The Frieze painted around this painting was later used by Peter Nahum and John Davies to create a frame around Khazad-Dum. I was not aware of this until I saw the painting framed in all it's glory at my exhibition in Sweden, to say I was impressed is an understatement.
